No fewer than 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
